Performance, security and flexibility are all features that developers are looking for as they design new products. As part of our continued effort to deliver the best possible solutions for our customers, Atmosic has added Zephyr support to our existing SoCs solutions. Read on to find out more about why we’re supporting Zephyr and the benefits for our customers.
What is Zephyr?
Zephyr is an open source, real-time operating system (RTOS) that is ideal for embedded systems in a variety of resource-constrained IoT applications. These types of applications include sensors and beacons used in asset tracking, environmental sensors, consumer devices like wireless remote controls and keyboards, healthcare applications, and more. Zephyr has built-in support for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and is modular, capable of supporting a variety of configurations, making it easier for developers to customize based on their specific application requirements.
Benefits for Atmosic’s Customers
Zephyr provides a complete platform and development environment for Atmosic’s customers and has the core kernel, memory management, and security features embedded developers expect. As a proven open-source ecosystem with years of cooperative development, Zephyr is a mature and stable platform allows our customers to bring their products to market with confidence.
Additionally, Zephyr gives developers the flexibility to update to newer hardware platforms over time. This makes it easy for developers to switch to Atmosic’s solutions without losing the application code they have already developed and be confident that code can be used on future Atmosic solutions. So developers can re-use code across their entire product lineup and scale their solutions for different product tiers and target markets.
Incorporating Atmosic’s Technology Differentiators
Zephyr allows our customers to also take advantage of our industry leading low power consumption and integrated energy harvesting power management unit (PMU). Available device drivers support all our low power modes of operation ensuring the lowest power consumption possible for Bluetooth LE applications. Furthermore, support for energy harvesting technology makes it possible to capture, use, and store energy from light, RF, heat, and motion sources. The integrated PMU eliminates additional components usually required in energy harvesting designs, which both improves efficiency and lowers the bill of materials (BOM) of the end product. Energy harvesting together with our extreme low power consumption makes it possible for batteries to last a product’s entire lifetime or in some cases to operate completely battery-free.
